Immigrant Visas
Fiance(e) Visas
An individual who wishes to travel to the U.S. for the purpose of marrying an American citizen and residing in the U.S. must obtain a K-1 visa. For detailed information about the process of applying for a Fiance(e) visa, visit the State Department’s Non-Immigrant Visa for a Fiance(e) page.
The K-1 visa allows a foreign citizen to enter the United States in order to marry an American citizen. After the marriage takes place, the applicant must apply to change status directly with the U.S. Citizens and Immigration Service (USCIS). Although the K-1 visa is technically a non-immigrant visa, it is treated in the same way as an immigrant visa because the applicant intends to remain in the U.S.
