Reopening of the Theodor Aman Museum. Bucharest, April 23, 2009 (Lucian Crusoveanu / Public Diplomacy Office)

Bucharest, Romania
April 23, 2009

Mr. Stefan Gheorghiu,
Director Ionita,
Esteemed guests,
Ladies and gentlemen,

It's a pleasure to be here today at this landmark of the culture, art and history of Bucharest and Romania – the museum residence of the famous Romanian painter and cultural figure Theodor Aman.

In 2001, the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest recognized the importance of restoring this neglected architectural jewel and granted funds for its restoration. Former Ambassador Michael Guest was a champion of this project. We want to thank the Municipality and the Rotary Club for helping bring this project to its long-awaited conclusion.

The U.S. Embassy has dedicated significant resources to the restoration of valuable cultural and historic projects throughout Romania. Each year the Department of State through its Ambassador Fund for Cultural Preservation helps to preserve and restore national treasures worldwide.

For the last seven years, funds have been awarded annually to important Romania cultural sites around the country including, in 2003, the restoration of another jewel of Bucharest – the Stavropoleos Church. And in 2006, the renovation of the west façade of the beautiful Art Museum in Cluj-Napoca was funded through this Embassy program.

We congratulate the Museum of Bucharest, which coordinated the complicated task of restoring the Aman Museum to its old glory. Now the Romanian public can once again enjoy the works of art sheltered in this beautiful building in the heart of Bucharest. We are honored to have played a small role in making that happen.

Thank you.
