Statement Of Charge D’affaires Jeri Guthrie-Corn On The Death Of Captain Iuliu-Vasile Unguras

We were saddened today to hear of the death of Captain Iuliu-Vasile Unguras of the 21st Mountain Battalion in Predeal who was killed in the line of duty while on a patrol mission in Zabul Province, Afghanistan. The Government of the United States extends its sincere condolences to Captain Unguras’s family and friends, and to his brave fellow soldiers. We also express our deepest concern for Captain Unguras’s four wounded fellow soldiers who are currently hospitalized in Lagman and Kandahar. We pray for their speedy and full recovery.

Captain Unguras and his comrades, like all of Romania’s soldiers, perform their missions with great courage and dedication to protecting the rights and freedom of the Afghan people. We are again reminded with the loss of Captain Unguras that his sacrifice was in pursuit of a most honorable and noble cause. We are proud that Romania is our ally and partner in this common struggle.
