Embassy Press Release

Statement by the U.S. Embassy

November 13, 2008

As Defense Minister Melescanu has noted, the United States continues to negotiate with the government of Iraq on a Status of Forces Agreement governing the legal status of U.S. troops in Iraq upon the expiration of the current United Nations mandate later this year.

The United States would welcome troops from other coalition partners also remaining in Iraq should the government of Iraq request them to do so.

Romanian troops have served in Iraq with valor and distinction, contributing directly to the security of Iraq and the stability of the entire region.

We hope the government of Romania would consider seriously any request from the Iraqi government for Romanian troops to remain in Iraq to continue this important endeavor.
