Ambassador Thanks Fulbright Corporate Sponsors and Congratulates New Grantees

June 27, 2008

Ambassador Nicholas F. Taubman together with representatives of the Government of Romania and the Board of Directors of the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission thanked its corporate sponsors on Thursday night, June 26, for their investment in the promotion of Romanian and American academic exchanges. This year, nearly $100,000 in corporate support enabled the Fulbright Commission in Romania to offer five additional prestigious scholarships in the fields of economics, law, public administration, IT, and civil engineering.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Research representatives joined Fulbright alumni and others in congratulating the 2008-09 Romanian Fulbright Award Winners who will be leaving this summer for educational programs at top universities in the United States such as Duke, Columbia, and New York University.

Among this year’s corporate sponsors of the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission are The Romanian-American Enterprise Fund (RAEF), COCA-COLA ROMANIA, UPC Romania, Citibank Romania, IBM ROMANIA, JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel, Delta Air Lines, Hewlett Packard, and Lowe and Partners.

During the gala cocktail at the JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel, the Ambassador remarked that “It is encouraging to know that these top companies share our commitment to promoting international educational exchange and in supporting education in Romania.”

Those gathered also farewell to outgoing Fulbright Director, Dr. Barbara Nelson, and welcomed the incoming Director, Dr. Dorina Tudor. Both are Fulbright Scholar alumni.

The Fulbright scholarly exchange program in Romania debuted in 1960. After more than 55 years, nearly 1600 students, researchers, and professors from the U.S. and Romania have benefited from support through Fulbright-sponsored grants which allowed them to study, teach and conduct research. The Commission is jointly funded by the US and Romanian Governments, through the US Department of State and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
