I am delighted to be able to join all of you here in Craiova to celebrate the start of production at Ford Motor Company's newest automotive plant. Since Ford first announced its intention to make this strategic investment in Romania, many people – in Ford, in the Romanian Government, in the local community here – have worked tirelessly to make this welcome day a reality. I am pleased that the United States Embassy has also been able to assist at important junctures. Even more special for me is that, since my arrival in Romania just two short weeks ago, this event marks my first opportunity to travel outside of Bucharest and to see and experience some of the beauty and diversity of this great country. I feel very honored to be here.
We are all aware that this is a difficult economic period for the world and for Romania. Few industries have felt the effects of the global economic downturn more acutely than the automotive industry. However, that fact makes today's ceremony all the more significant. Forward-looking companies like Ford are taking advantage of this period to better position themselves as global competitors and to seize new opportunities as the markets begin to recover. Ford's presence here will be a powerful engine for growth in Romania's economy, and in this Craiova community. It is a strong vote of confidence in Romania's economic future – and it stands as tangible example of the enduring economic cooperation and friendship between Romania and the United States of America.
Nearly one hundred years ago, Henry Ford amazed the world and revolutionized the automotive industry with his pioneering, mass-production assembly line techniques. The rugged but affordable cars that rolled off those early assembly lines suddenly made the dream of car ownership a reality for millions of Americans. Today, Ford remains a leader in automotive design, innovation, and quality.
Let me also stress that this is also an auspicious day for the people of Craiova. The employees at this plant will apply their excellent technical skills and high productivity to build cars that you can be proud of. I am confident that Ford's presence here will serve as a magnet for additional investment and increased prosperity. I am also certain you will also find the Ford Motor Company to be a good corporate citizen and a great asset to your community.
I come to Romania determined to do everything I can to deepen our friendship and strengthen our bonds of cooperation and mutual respect. In that regard, I hope my tenure here as Ambassador will see many more events such as this one. Again, thank you and congratulations.
