Statement of Chargé d'Affaires Jeri Guthrie-Corn on the Death of Sergeant Major Claudiu Chira

With deep sadness I learned on Thursday evening of the death of Sergeant Major Claudiu Chira who was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan. On behalf of the government of the United States I want to express my condolences to his family and friends, as well as to his fellow soldiers of the 21stth Mountain Battalion.

Courageous Romanian soldiers everyday support NATO’s critical mission to oppose tyranny and extremism in Afghanistan and to help Afghans rebuild their nation. The dedication of Sergeant Major Chira and his compatriots to their mission reflects Romania’s commitment to democracy and freedom for the Afghan people. The United States and other nations are proud to be partners with Romania in our common goal of strengthening democracies around the world.
