STATEMENT OF AMBASSADOR NICHOLAS F. TAUBMAN

"It is with the profoundest regret that I learned on Thursday of the death of Sergeant Major Aurel Marcu in Afghanistan. At this point our prayers have to be with his family and friends and also with his injured comrades, Lieutenant Grigore and Private First Class Zafiu. I wish them both a speedy and complete recovery from their injuries.

The member states of NATO are dedicated to assuring that Afghanistan never returns to being a haven for international terrorism. The valiant members of the Romanian Army in Afghanistan, under conditions of extreme hardship, are doing their part to achieve this goal. We all owe them a debt of gratitude for their courage and self-sacrifice."
