Statement of Ambassador Nicholas F. Taubman on the Death of Sergeant Major Dragos Traian Alexandrescu

I was saddened to hear that Sergeant Major Alexandrescu was killed in the line of duty this past Sunday while serving outside of Qalat, Afghanistan. On behalf of the United States government, I would like to extend my sincere and heartfelt condolences to Sergeant Major Alexandrescu’s family and friends, as well as to his brave comrades in the Dragoslavele Battalion. I also send our best wishes to Sergeant Major Matei Gheorghe Irinel, Private First Class Angelescu Dumitru Bogdan, Soldier Mihai Dumitru Marius, and Soldier Butoi Ionut Claudiu, and wish them a speedy and complete recovery.

Romanian troops serving under difficult conditions in Afghanistan perform a vital role in fighting terrorism and restoring order in that country. Their courage and dedication to their mission makes the United States and other nations proud to be their partners in our common goal of strengthening democracies around the world.
