Good morning Minister Orban, Mr. Neuenschwander, Mr. Jahangir, members of the press corp., distinguished guests;

It's a real pleasure for me to take part in this special celebration today…marking the “reconnection” of our two countries through the launch of the only nonstop service between Romania and the United States. This event is certainly symbolic of America's and Romania's "high flying" relationship and a good omen that the relationship will further develop.

One of my goals as the US Ambassador to Romania is to encourage greater US presence in this vital and thriving market and I can’t think of a better way to do that than providing quick and access. In the business world we know that time is money. The faster travel time and direct route between our two counties will not only save business people precious resources but the 40 plus connecting flights from JFK will allow Romanians to access domestic markets that they might not have considered otherwise.

Delta's new service will also allow tourists, politicians and scholars to learn more about our two great cities and about our two great countries as well as to reunite families and friends. More air passengers and visitors will inevitably bring about a greater exchange of investment, trade, ideas, innovations and understanding. You are to be thanked, Delta, for helping to make this Ambassador’s job that much easier!

Several important exchanges between New York and Bucharest have already begun – demonstrating the potential that exists for expanded travel between these two cities. Earlier this year, we celebrated New York in Bucharest, with a number of cultural events, including the Broadway – Bucharest show at the Opereta Theater and an exhibit of Landmarks of New York at Bucharest City Museum. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg took note of these events, and he sent us a message expressing his appreciation for the interest Romanians have shown in New York. Let me quote Mayor Bloomberg:

"New Yorkers are grateful for Romania’s support after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and we look forward to strengthening the friendship between our two nations."

I am sure that Delta’s presence here will contribute to even stronger ties between Bucharest and New York and between Romania and the United States.

On behalf of the United States Embassy and its staff, I welcome Delta back to Bucharest and wish you the very best of luck!

Thank you.
