Statement of Ambassador Nicholas F. Taubman on the Death of Private First Class Ionut Cosmin Sandu

With deep sadness I learned of the death of Private First Class Ionut Cosmin Sandu, killed in the line of duty while serving in Zabul province, Afghanistan. On behalf of the government of the United States I want to express my condolences to his family and friends, as well as to all the soldiers of the 300th Infantry “St. Andrew Battalion.” I also wish a speedy recovery to his wounded comrade Corporal Silviu Atanasiu.

The valiant troops of the Romanian Army are performing a vital role in NATO’s mission to oppose tyranny and extremism in Afghanistan. The United States is proud to have Romania as one of its closest allies in our common struggle.
