Services for Americans
Why register ?
There are many important reasons why American citizens should register themselves at the American Citizens Services Unit in the Consular Section:
- This registry information can help Americans replace lost or stolen passports,
- ensure that they receive timely information about natural disasters, political unrest, or anything else that could affect their safety,
- and put them on the mailing list for the Embassy's newsletter and invitations to special events.
The registration information provided by American citizens is added into the Embassy's Warden System. The Warden System, which is maintained in the American Citizens Services Unit in the Consular Section, is organized by region throughout Romania, and is aided by the volunteer work of "Wardens" who help the Embassy pass along fast-breaking news to other American citizens in their regions.
In general, the duties of Embassy Wardens are not time-consuming but could be vital in time of an emergency. Americans interested in volunteering to become "Wardens" should mark their registration form notifying the Consular Section of their interest.
To register online, go to the Internet-Based Registration System (IBRS) at https://travelregistration.state.gov. You may also fill out the enclosed form (MS Word) and either fax it or bring it in person to the Consular Section. Registration forms received in person at the Consular Section can be used as a form of identification that will aid the Consular Section in replacing a lost or stolen passport. IBRS registrations and forms received by fax transmission can not be used as proof of the U.S. citizenship. Please pass on copies of this form to other American citizens you may know who have not registered with the Embassy.
