Chargé d'Affaires Ms. Jeri Guthrie-Corn

Jeri Guthrie-Corn is currently the Charge d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest, Romania, in the absence of an appointed Ambassador. Her regular position is of Deputy Chief of Mission during the mandate of an Ambassador at post.

She is a career Foreign Service Officer with the rank of counselor. She joined the Foreign Service in 1987.

From 2005-2007, she served in the Bureau of International Organizations of the Department of State as Deputy Director of the Office of Specialized Technical Agencies of the UN and as Director of the Office of UNESCO Affairs. In 2003-2005 Ms. Guthrie-Corn was the Senior Congressional Advisor for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.

Ms. Guthrie-Corn has served overseas in Algeria, Russia, France, and at the United States Mission to NATO. Her first assignment to Bucharest was in 1989-1991, during the last months of the Ceausescu regime, the revolution and the return of democracy to Romania.

She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in French Studies from the University of Montana, her home state. Ms. Guthrie-Corn earned a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in French Language and Literature with a specialization in medieval civilization. Previous to joining the Foreign Service she was an Assistant Professor of French at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and at Smith College in Massachusetts. In 2003 she completed a Master’s degree in National Security Studies from the National War College in Washington. She speaks French, Romanian and Russian.

Ms. Guthrie-Corn is married to Dr. Tony Corn and has two daughters.
