Monday, September 25, 2006, American Corner Iasi organized an interactive meeting on the issue of combating human traffic, called "STOP TRAFFICKING". This program proposed emphasizing the meaning of the date September 23, declared "International Day for Combating Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking in Women and Children."

The guest, Nelu Ivanusca, social assistant from Save the Children Romania Iasi Branch, drew the attention of participants on the dangers letting themselves influenced by persons who promise to improve their material conditions. The public was formed of the 12th E class students from the Economic College 1, a Peace Corps volunteer and people who came to the meeting after reading about it in a local newspaper (30 people).

For the present ones there were exposed ways of attracting the youngsters on the human traffic market: through newspapers announcements, which promise jobs abroad, through some false modeling agencies or through some "benevolent" persons who offer emigration and the promise of a better life, but also they were taught how to avoid no-way-out situations, by taking some safety measures.

In the second part of the program the participants watched the film "LILYA 4-EVER" and, after a new round of discussions, the documentary "Sex Slaves". The images, a little socking, generated obvious reactions on the faces of the people.

In the end, after viewing the films and after the discussions, the participants were asked to express, anonymously, on a sheet of paper, an inner thought, as a conclusion of this meting. Here are some examples:

"I have learned some things I already knew, but not as well explained."
"Today I have learned better to take care of myself and of the unknown people I meet and, especially, to be very careful and to get all the information about their offers."
"Sad and scary, everything starts from the lack of money and of family support."
"Don’t trust anyone who pretends to do things in your interest. Nobody decides what is good for us. Let’s read between the lines to find out who are we talking to."
"The human traffic is the most terrifying phenomenon of our century. It is unbelievable that nowadays there are slaves."
"Don’t let anybody destroy your dreams and your life, with everything it has more beautiful! The traffickers deserve the maximum punishment, which is a slow and painful death."

The event was covered by three local newspapers ("Flacara Iasului", "Evenimentul" and "Metropolis") and by a local TV station - TVR Iasi.

Traficantii merita pedeapsa maxima si anume o moarte lenta si dureroasa"

Evenimentul a beneficiat de prezenta a trei ziare locale ("Flacara Iasului", "Evenimentul" si "Metropolis" ) si a postului local de televiziune TVR Iasi.
