"I Go Forth" Presentation of Walt Whitman and Poetry Recital by Thomas E. Nibbelin

On October 2, 2007 the actor Thomas E. Nibbelin recited, in front of the Romanian audience at the American Corner in Bucharest, from the volume “Leaves of Grass” by Walt Whitman. Nibbelin is a media specialist, sports reporter, photographer, storyteller, camera operator, producer, film director, and writer. He studied theatrical art at the Universities of Wisconsin-Madison and South Carolina. He has acted in films as well as plays. He is the author of several plays such as “Superman Man”, “Fourth of July”, “Natural Selection”, “Mamet Beckett & Mano”, which he produced and directed as well.

In his presentation, Nibbelin talked about the significance of Walt Whitman’s work. He told students that Whitman is one of those who best understood the concept of “democracy” and it is high time for us to turn towards his poetry and prose.

The audience, consisting of mostly students, was invited to participate in the discussion and to ask questions. The students and the teachers from the High school “Spiru Haret” of Bucharest expressed their pleasure to have Mr. Nibbelin as their guest and invited him to help coordinate the staging of some short plays that the theater circle had been working on. On behalf of the U.S. Embassy, Mrs. Kathy Kavalec, Cultural Affairs Officer, took part in this event.

The guest signed the Honour Book of the National Pedagogical Library. The event raised obvious interest in the works of Walt Whitman. The participants promised to respond to other invitations by the American Corner Bucharest. At the end promotional materials were distributed.

"Ies la iveala". Prezentare Walt Whitman si recital poetic oferite de actorul american Thomas E. Nibbelin

Pe 2 octombrie 2007 actorul Thomas E. Nibbelin a recitat in fata publicului romanesc din volumul „Fire de iarba” al lui Walt Whitman relevand semnificatia marelui poet american in zilele noastre. Thomas Nibbelin este, in acelasi timp, specialist media, reporter sportiv, storyteller, operator de imagine, producator, regizor, scriitor, avand studii de arta teatrala la universitatile din Wisconsin-Madison si South Carolina. El este totodata autorul unor piese pe care le-a produs si regizat el insusi: “Superman Man”, “Fourth of July”, “Natural Selection”, “Mamet Beckett & Mano”.

In prezentarea sa, actorul Thomas Nibbelin a subliniat faptul ca Walt Whitman este unul dintre aceia care au inteles cel mai bine conceptul de „democratie” si ca este momentul sa ne întoarcem catre poezia si proza acestuia.

Publicul, constituit in mare parte din elevi, a fost invitat sa ia parte la discutii si a pus intrebari oaspetelui. De asemenea, elevii si cadrele didactice de la Liceul „Spiru Haret” din Bucuresti au facut o invitatie d-lui T. Nibbelin de a le face o vizita, aratandu-se incantati de a fi coordonati de domnia sa la punerea in scena a unor piese de teatru scurt in cadrul cercului de teatru care functioneaza in liceul lor. La eveniment a luat parte si d-na Kathy Kavalec, Atasat Cultural din partea Ambasadei SUA.

Actorul T. Nibbelin a semnat in Cartea de Onoare a Bibliotecii Pedagogice Nationale „I.C. Petrescu”, gazda centrului American Corner Bucuresti. Alti participanti au urmat exemplul oaspetelui.

Evenimentul s-a derulat pe parcursul a doua ore intr-o atmosfera calda, creativa, trezind participantilor un vadit interes pentru controversatul poet american Walt Whitman si poezia sa, precum si pentru teatru. Elevii si cadrele didactice au promis ca vor da curs si altor invitatii de acest gen oferite de American Corner Bucuresti. La final, au fost distribuite elevilor materiale promotionale.
