Modern Slavery: Trafficking in Persons

On September 27, 2006, American Corner Baia Mare designed an event to combat human trafficking. The activity included the screening of feature film “Lilya 4-Ever”, followed by open discussions on the theme above.

Among the guests a Police representative (Insp. Gabriela Liahovici), two NGO representatives (Crina Serbu, social worker & Claudia Koblicika, sociologist - from ARTEMIS), an attorney (Larisa Bude), and a teacher specialized in sociology (Lavinia Nan) were invited. The target audience was high-school students (15-18) and teachers (mainly head-teachers). About 150 persons attended this event.

Following the film presentation, the guests highlighted the main ideas and components that are part of the human trafficking process. They encouraged the audience to express their feelings and thoughts on the subject. It turned into a vivid discussion, which lasted about an hour. They also focused on how one could recognize elements of trafficking and what he/she should do in such a situation.

We invited head-teachers and their students because the event might have follow-up activities, done in their school. Some of the teachers present at this event have already expressed their willingness to organize follow-up activities on the theme of human trafficking.

We agreed, so there is more about to come…

The students received leaflets and written information about the theme in discussion and about the American Corner Baia Mare.

Media coverage:
• 7 articles in 4 local newspapers (Graiul Maramuresului, Glasul Maramuresului, Informatia zilei, Detectivul de Presa);
• 2 features at local TV stations (Axa TV, Alfa TV).

Ecouri in media locala:

• 2 reportaje la statiile TV locale (Axa TV, Alfa TV).
